This was far far better than I expected from the blurb. It is a proper old fashioned saga-immigrants trying to build an American Dream-but with a twist (well several actually). The characters are all beautifully portrayed particularly Calliope/Call. The author does a superb job in exploring her/his feelings and motivations. There are moments of comedy, of tragedy and even an edge of the seat car chase. And just as I was wondering what had happened to Desdemona and was this a gaping hole in the plot she reappears in the last few pages. A great and enjoyable read.

Expansive story, covering 3 generations of a Greek family. I loved reading about the grandparents and their trek to the US. Overall, very interesting and well-written. My only complaint is that the story stalled out in Calliope's adolescence. I kept waiting and waiting for her secret to be discovered, and perhaps my impatience made it seem as if it took forever to get there. Would recommend it!

Não foi à toa que o livro ganhou prêmio Pulitzer. Excelente em vários aspectos. Trama, escrita, personagens tornam Middlesex um livro envolvente, tão envolvente que as centenas páginas não cansam nem um pouco.

Recomendo!

Hmm. I have a hard time reviewing Middlesex. I expected to really love this book based on reviews and the subject matter, but it didn't quite live up to the expectations. It's not that there was anything I disliked about the book, I liked the whole story that spanned for three generations from Greece to Turkey to Michigan to California. There were many individual storylines and I enjoyed them all, but didn't really invested into any of them and the book didn't envoke big emotions, which to me is a requirement of a great book. I appreciate the exploration of being intesex, enjoyed the Greek culture and really liked the ending of Middlesex.

"My family found that, contrary to popular opinion, gender was not all that important. My change from girl to boy was far less dramatic than the distance anybody travels from infancy to adulthood. In most ways I remained the same I’d always been."

Such a beautiful book. I'm still soaking it all in but this was both an education, an adventure and a completely gorgeous read.
