Number 4 in the 5 part lovely family saga. Elizabeth Jane Howard has really hit her stride with this one. The pacing is just right, the balance of characters is perfect. I found Casting Off to be the most clear coming of age and romantic so far. I love it. There’s brilliant descriptions of rooms and meals, characters finally facing up to who they have become and lots of sweet greetings with kisses on the cheek.

As I grow more familiar with all Elizabeth Jane Howard's characters I care about them all more. I was gripped by this instalment of the series and very nearly missed my bus stop a few times. This obviously points to some wonderful writing and characterisation. I was so happy for both Clary and Polly when all came good for them, that it quite cheered my day. They are like old friends. What will happy to them all in the final book I wonder?

Utterly engrossing, the characters come to feel completely real. My favourite books of all time!
