I watched the anime adaptation of this manga approximately 9000 years ago and have been wanting to revisit it by reading the manga for a while. I think I waited too long; time hasn't been kind to this story. It's charming, but not for me anymore. I don't think I'll read the rest of the volumes.

The premise was interesting which is why I picked this up. The fantasy part wasn't bad. It was interesting where I wanted to keep going. The romance is just...ugh. Emotionally, it was cute in the beginning, but later on, it gets nauseating. You have two guys fawning over one girl. And two girls fawning over one guy. And the main guy likes the protagonist (obviously).

So what ends up happening? The girl's best friend becomes bitter and automatically hates her best friend. It's quite over-dramatic. The protagonist is a very stereotypical girl who depends on outdated gender norms: depends on a guy, weak, whines all the time, etc. Initially, when I opened the book, I wasn't impressed with the art style, but it has grown on me. Overall, I'm interested to see how this story goes, so I might pick up the 2nd volume if I get the chance.

But yes, this is a 90s manga, so it does seem outdated at times. But not a bad read and would recommend if you're into fantasy-romance.

Fushigi Yûgi was the first manga I ever read, waaaaay back when I was 14. It has a special place in my heart, so I am very biased. I couldn’t even say how many times I have read it through, but it has been a little while. I decided to start collecting these multiple volume editions on kindle to give my 19yr old paperback copies a break. I am thoroughly enjoying the re-read!

First time going through this series and, so far, I love it. The art is very beautiful and the story very interesting. I wasn't expecting the sudden dark turn it took towards the end of volume 3! D:
