First off, I loved the idea of this book; the execution though was somewhat lacking. I found myself skimming through most of the first half and then subsequently, not feeling any sort of emotional response to the ending. IMO, there was too much time spent on the characters traveling to places making the action sequences between the heroes and villains feel a bit rushed. I do love Sebastian—he's brooding without being overly annoying, and he grew the most for me throughout the book.

All in all, my reaction was MEH but the authors have hooked me so I'm curious to read the second book :)

Pretty good book with some interesting people and a decent story/ premise. I feel like I should have liked it more than I did - it was slow moving and while some of the repartee is funny, I just couldn’t really connect with the characters, and the ending was too abrupt. Hoping book two will be better.

Such a fun YA series! Love the humor and Victorian x-men vibes.

I had been waiting to get my hands on a copy of These Vicious Masks for a while so there was a bit of a celebration when I finally did get this in the mail. If you don’t know, I love a good historical book and this one sounded fantastic…Jane Austen meets X-Men – Sign me up!

As a young girl living in Victorian England, Evelyn is living a life that is stifling and she isn’t willing to leave her sister to danger no matter what will happen to her reputation. When her sister goes missing, Evelyn travels to London to find her and she realizes there is more to the world than she originally thought. What I enjoyed about this book was that it took the historical genre and added a paranormal aspect that wouldn’t normally be there.

I loved how tenacious Evelyn was when it came to finding her sister. She was willing to put everything on the line, including her reputation, to save Rose and she finds out along the way what she’s capable of. Supported in her search by Mr. Grey and Mr. Braddock, Evelyn proves that she is more than just a lady who should be seen and not heard. I loved the banter between all of the characters and the development of the story was very well done.

If you are looking for a book that is a great blend of historical setting and rules alongside some great storytelling, definitely check this one out. I look forward to more from these authors and can’t wait to see what happens next with this group of characters!

Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!

I was excited for this, because it looked and sounded amazing, and the publishers sent this to me, but it was exhausting to get through and there were moments where I had to put it down for the rest of the day because I couldn't get through it.

Maybe I picked this book up at the wrong time, and a rereading next year or something would make it more interesting to me but as of now...I'm going to leave it at 3 stars and hope that I can appreciate it more later.

I ran across this book the other day and just knew I was going to pick it up! First, because that cover is awesome, and second because it is billed as...

Jane Austen meets X-Men

So really, I had no choice but ti buy it!

This was a thoroughly delightful read! The plot was engaging and kept me interested. The characters, both main, and secondary were well written, and intriguing. Evelyn was funny, and feisty. Sebastian was broody, and mysterious. Nicholas was charming and also mysterious.

This book is set in 1882 London, and Rose, Evelyn's sister has gone missing. Evelyn leaves home and with the help of Mr. Kent (Nicolas) and Sebastian Braddock, she sets about trying to find out what happened to her. Of course during all this she discovers she and others around her have these secret supernatural powers.

Overall I really enjoyed this one. My only small complaint was the ending. I assume that there will be a book two, but I was hoping for more of a resolution with the
Spoiler romance, slight love triangle, plot
but I have my fingers crossed I will get that closure in the next book (if there indeed is one)

Just read this is going to be a trilogy!!

I will fully admit I picked up all three in the series because of the covers, they're beautiful and they draw you in, they just softly whisper pick me up, read me, you won't be sorry.... and I wasn't.
This world seems so real, the characters, the challenges, ok so maybe the magical powers aren't that realistic but having your own strengths and learning to live life with them is. I can't wait to see what's in store for our gallant group in book two and beyond.

Dieses Ende gefällt mir sehr! Aber ich will trotzdem einen zweiten Teil. Wird es einen geben? Ich hoffe doch!
