"THIS IS THE KIND OF DREAM YOU DON'T WAKE UP FROM, HENRY"

Yikes, I hate being the one low rating in a sea of love for this one, but I just...couldn't like it. Maybe I read too much horror? No, that's probably not it. I just...I guessed "who done it" before chapter 5...so the rest was just a trudge through awkward dialogue and pointless drama to get to the end I already knew.

oh well..off to the next....

Somewhat enjoyable book. But honestly there was just so much about this that I really had issues with

The murderer was entirely predictable, simply because of who he was in the book. There was no surprise there. A book should have you be able to guess who the murderer is but there should still be some time taken to figure it out. It shouldn't be obvious from the moment that you meet the character. Also I didn't really feel like the clues matched up with the ending. It didn't really lead to the murderer being who they were but you still know anyway.

My main problem with this book was that all the characters felt a little one note to me.
Willa's main defining quality was that she could contact ghosts. Her personality otherwise felt all over the place.
Wyatt was there to help Willa get information. And be a love interest. And that wasn't even that believable

Marnie was a pathological liar and wanted all the attention on her. Except for one part at the end she could have not existed in the book and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Willa's mom had no personality. She was barely in the book. And there was supposedly all this tension between them for her getting remarried. But all that went away within one conversation and it wasn't even believable for the rest of the book anyway

Stepdad barely existed in the book. He was there so Willa could live in the house she lived in.

Also Willa's dad who she thinks that she killed. She calls one doctor and finds out something and two years of guilt disappear just like that.

All in all this was an okay book. But the mystery was lacking. I'd suggest sticking with her dead girls trilogy. Much better books in my opinion

*I listened to the audiobook

Listening to a YA horror in the evening in the dark is THE BEST. It was the sweetest torture and I think I'll be doing this more often! The narrator did an amazing performance. I don't think I would've enjoyed it this much if I had read it myself. She portrayed our main character, Willa, with the perfect amount of sarcasm in her tone. Just brilliant. I would recommend this audio for sure!

Summary of my rating:
Cover: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Narrator: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Ending: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Overall book: ⭐⭐⭐⭐+0.5

This was exactly what I needed when stuck in bed with a head cold! With incredible ease, I was whisked away to the Hollywood Hills then drawn into the serial killer mystery while being haunted by the same ghosts as Willa. I was engulfed in this fictional world and loved the ride to the nail biting, though not totally surprising, end.

I love Katie Alender's books. I especially loved this one. I loved the mystery side and the creepy ghost side.

4 stars - overall a great book, but around the middle it sort of lacked 'something'; dialog was a bit dry in the middle too. But then it sped up and had a great ending, although I wish that Marnie had died as one of the killer's victims.... she would have then had one last place in the spotlight. She was a true bitch!

If only this book ended a page earlier because the I love yous came out of nowhere. I honestly couldn't put the book down, its kind of that easy enjoyable read that you just fly through.
