I first read the book, when it came out and I loved it. Back then I didn't read the blurb and just thought it was a "realistic" end-of-the-world-book, so when the first giant and magic showed up, I was completely shocked, but that also made me be so much more engrossed in the atmosphere and plot of the book. So I was a bit scared to re-read it. But I still love it.
Even knowing the plot, the atmosphere and tone of this book are just so captivating, it pulls me into this fantastical apocalypse world with magic and weird, wise strangers and evil scientists and giants.  The writing is very beautiful, it's really easy to read in just one go.
I love the characters, too. Yes, they are all special, but they also seem like regular teenagers, still growing up during the apocalypse. And they're all queer!
In my opinion, the queer rep is well done. There was really only one part (when they were talking about "the two genders"), that was not good.
