I enjoyed binge reading the first 15 books in this series. It was a little more difficult, although not impossible, to come back after a break waiting for this latest book to be released. The series relies strongly on knowledge of the earlier books in order for you to be invested in the characters, and in some cases to even know who they are. I would definitely not recommend this as a stand alone book, which is one of the reasons I only rated it 3 stars.

The other reason I didn’t rate it more highly is that the author gets pedantic when she interrupts an interesting mystery story in order to philosophize. With this book she does that to ponder fear, especially as the name indicates, the consequences of fear.

WW II is well under way in Europe, and Maisie is involved in work for the Special Operations Executive. I enjoyed the parts related to her SOE work, but didn't love how she left Anna a lot more than I would have expected despite her work. She has a strong relationship with an American, and that was nice to see after the loss she's suffered in previous books as well. The plot was a bit convoluted to me, but I still love this series.

Was lucky to read this early in ARC form :)

I thought this series hit a slump around book 12, but imho it's fully recovered from said slump! This Maisie really reminds me of Maisie from the early books.

Ah Maisie!  A boy sees a scuffle and killing. Maisie investigates. This installment is full of all the gentle investigating she is known for. Loved it.

Maisie Dobbs is one of my all time favorite heroines. Her thoughtful approach to her life has actually inspired me on occasion. I knew what was coming at some point in this story, authors can play with small details of history, but something as consequential as the bombing of Pearl Harbor isn’t one of those things. As the tale progressed, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t worry that the reader’s time with Maisie was coming to a close as a result of the changes in her personal and professional life, but my hope truly is that there are more adventures for we readers with Maisie and her family. Like Maisie said, there is hope.
