Definitely went into this expecting more.  While I almost DNF’d it at 9% I kept going.  It was nearly identical to the movie only a few parts changed but ultimately it was an okay book.  I think I would have liked it more when I was a teenager rather than now but in the end I listened to the audiobook (in x3) in one go of it while I cleaned my house so it kept me busy entertained enough.

I'm re-reading this series after a 15 year break and they hold up better than I could have hoped. The Hunger Games is radically political and is a great social commentary on how war is made into entertainment and so many other really deep themes. I believe the Hunger Games series to be vital reading on how violence truly is a cycle that takes more than willpower to break.

May the odds be ever in your favor while reading these fantastic books!

I first read this book when I was in middle school and the movie adaptations were just coming out. I remember the focus on the "love story" that was at the heart of this series. But the Hunger Games isn't about love; it's about survival in a society where twenty-four children kill each other for sport on live TV every year. Katniss has an advantage because she already knows what's it like to starve, to lose someone, to hunt and to rage against the system that forces her to do these things. It uncovers the strategy and psychology of being a TV star and those of being a traumatized teenager put into a death game where traps and other contestants could kill you at any moment. It's harrowing and tense and once the Games end, you realize that it's just the tip of the iceberg.

the book really immerses you, allowing you to feel the adrenaline of Katniss in the Games with her. Classic for a reason and it’s intense in a good way.
