There is a reason The Hunger Games launched a thousand YA dystopian knock offs. This novel doesn't just hold up, it is outstanding. Suzanne Collins' control of limited first person and indirect characterisation is outstanding.

Reading this book as an adult and understanding why Suzanne Collins wrote it and bringing that into my reading and analysis has made this book even more significant for me. It’s a really fantastic story and it’s an important read, especially for the age it’s written for, to understand political control and subjugation. All I want is the liberation of Panem and for Katniss to get to be free and free to explore her own needs and feelings. Thank god for the next two books.

i never got around to reading these books as a kid and i’m so glad i decided to pick them up now. i’ve seen the films so i kind of new what to expect, but katniss’s internal monologue adds SO much to the storytelling. excited to continue with the series

I had never read the books before this, but I have previously watched all the films. In comparison to the films I love this book so much more. The characters are so well written and I felt such a connection with each of them individually. Every scene with Rue broke my heart, especially knowing what happens in the films. SPOILERS AHEAD! The scene where we the readers and Katniss find out about Peeta's amputation I was in SHOCK, why was this never in the films!! The end line of the book however left me wanting more, you'll never guess what I am reading next!?
