I remember this taking awhile to read and i kept taking breaks because I started it after reading "The White Man's Burden" in class.

Surprising how a movie can cloud your ideas of what a book will be. I had no idea the Jungle Book (the book) was short stories! I thought it would be a novel. And all of the stories aren’t even about Mowgli... That said, I enjoyed the stories.

I come back to this a lot, a favorite for the writing, and a reminder that imperialism and racism are sweet poison of the time - that it's easy to fall into the beautiful words, and ignore the utter callous horror of that neutral shunning voice. The claim that some people aren't people, that some are dirty, that some are better.

This is probably the best example - especially in The White Seal - of Kipling just being godsawful toxic while loving their subject matter and embracing their words.

this was honestly a struggle to pick up again and again cause of how boring it was when i finished with the main story. ‘the jungle book’ was fine but the short stories that followed were 1) unexpected 2) unnecessary and 3) boring as hell. the only semi-exception among them was “rikki-tikki-tavi” which was somewhat entertaining, the other ones i don’t even remember much of, i’m just glad i’m finally done with this book and can move onto other stuff that will hopefully pull me out of my reading slump ;-;
