This was one of the best Phryne Fisher books I think. It was nice to have something different from the usual cavorting about Melbourne, and I do think Kerry Greenwood does a really good job of incorporating modern themes into her period writing - disenfranchised groups often have a big role in her books and are treated very sympathetically without feeling anachronistic.

Just discovered that I had never read this one! So exciting to read it for the first time and no idea how I missed it first time around. Anyway the book: another intricate mystery with interesting circus characters and the ever feisty Phryne. This one is pre-Lin Chung who is yet to arrive on the scene. But there are other intriguing lovers.

Surprising and interesting portrayal of transgender and intersex characters that I think successfully walks the line between respectful portrayal and period-accurate reactions and language (though other people may well have a different experience with/reaction to it). That said, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the ones that came before; something just felt a little off about it in general.
