I really want to know what happens next. I loved it and I couldn't put it down and I have so many questions. Now this is a book I could tear apart, and since I'll probably get a new copy later I might come back to this and make notes.

(Will probably come back and update this when I read books 2 and 3, but who knows when that will be.)

This was a summarily Weird book. It might have been intentional but I felt similar to how the main character felt for the entire book: a mixture of revulsion, confusion, sympathy and curiosity. I constantly said to my self "Gross, why would they do that? Ugh I don't want to read on to find out but I've got to know!" and kept going. A synopsis in a sentence for this book would be "The aliens have come in our time of need, unfortunately, they've come to bang." I understand that this book has been widely interpreted as a allegory for colonization, black America and other political movements and I could see that those things were certainly present but I had a hard time digging them out just because of the sheer alien-ness of the aliens and their strange, unnatural relationships with the humans. I'm still intensely curious about Lilith's future but I don't know if I can bring myself to read the second book because of that alien-ness. Octavia has really out done herself in making me feel both grossed out and conflicted.

spectacular. Brings up hard questions (and doesn't answer them).

this book is so immersive it doesn’t really matter where you read it. I just so happened to be sitting outside. when i came back to earth, not entirely convinced i had, fuzzy caterpillar-esque vines were twisting toward me in the breeze. my brain hiccuped its way through
rationalizing what i now know is an itea plant. this thing, only ever green leaves, has been entwining with a tree, unnoticed, only to bloom at the funniest possible moment. and just as you are told the direction this book is heading, just as it hits every beat, the end is still so shockingly obscene, so hopelessly encompassing!! loved it
