To be honest, Helium really didn't appeal to me that much in the first 15 pages more or less because it leaned more on the author's poetic inclination to heartbreak. As a NBSB individual it's kind of cringy and too insulting for my fragile ego. Kidding ahhahahaha! They're actually written well but we're too repetitive at times which is why I suddenly felt like giving this up. However, as it progressed this book turned out to be so much more than a poetry collection of heartbreak! It skirted a lot of relevant themes without glossing over them. You can also find messages on casual to extreme racism, lawless violence, toxic masculinity, depression, and the rediscovery of love. I can't count how many times I shouted in approval at the amount of shade present in this book. Here are some of my favorite quotes!
"My hobbies include: editing my life story,
hiding behind metaphors,
and trying to convince my shadow
that I’m someone worth following"
"You cracked hourglass
with sand spilling from behind your ribs.
You wasted my time.
How dare you linger on my lips
and then kiss me like a stuttering apology

This book is filled with incredible, inspiring words. The poetry is able to be read quickly, but made me want to read it over and over again. I purchased this book after hearing the spoken word by Francisco, "Complainers". I would recommend watching the video before reading, because it gives you a sense of the passion behind his words.

I loved almost all of the pieces in this collection! I found the pieces were written in such a way that they made me think about certain topics in a new or more well-rounded way. I loved the metaphors and their creativity but also that I understood what was being portrayed.

i liked part i and part ii in their entirety. in the latter parts there were verses that gripped me, but seldom the whole poem. overall i enjoyed it and i would love to re read it some day.

Wow... just wow. I was blown away by this collection of poetry about self analysis, race, gender, sexism, politics, and more. If you can get your hands on the audiobook I highly recommend it!!

I love how some of the poems are so lighthearted and fun and others are a lot deeper. Of course there are some poems in here that don't speak to me, but poems are so personal that someone else might love them. Overall, I think Rudy is a really amazing poet!
