i love this series! this is literally the only book where i was too addicted to the series to care about spoilers, and searched up folk of the air stuff on pinterest constantly while waiting for The Queen of Nothing to finally be available in my library!!
a satisfying enough conclusion but I'm happy there's more books because I still need answers and more elfhame content

thoughts while reading

p14: what an absolute evil prick
p15: relatable
p30: and...badass jude is back
p40: aww lil human bonding
p42: it better be cardan
p43: oh for flips sake
p46: even though i knew
taryn murdered locke
it's still kinda crazy. now the only question is why
p59: ah that makes perfect sense
p67: no i think he will know it's her just because she'll be more beautiful than taryn. too beautiful
p74: oh damn i am really looking forward to this
p75: oh my god he's so impatiently in love that he can't even bear to wait a few minutes to humiliate her like usual before giving up the pretense!
p78: i was not expecting that
p119: oriana is a queen for
seeing through jude and helping her

p125?: OMG IT'S
CARDAN HE CAME TO SAVE JUDE HIMSELF

p128: i'm cackling that really would be funny
p129?: he does love her and really want to protect her 🥺
p142: ahhh she really is the queen of elfhame
p149: what a queen using her period to evade questioning
p170: no i think cardan should've stayed to hold her hand or something 😔 not that she'd let him of course
p184: i actual love that door
p187: i really want to know cardan's true name
p212: poor baby is so scared of rejection
p220: oh shit, not what I was expecting
p223: madoc's only saying that because he doesn't believe she's strong enough
p239: heather is bringing that main character energy right now and i love her for it
p254: bet this story is completely relevant and
cardan will be inside the snake

p260: ah! finally #
roach&bomb
! also THIS MEANS
JUDE CAN HEAL CARDAN

p270: see people! cardan is a sweetheart after all ❤️
p280: gosh what damn queen 👑 she's stronger than i could ever hope to be
p282: SHE'S FINALLY OPENLY ADMITTING HER FEELINGS
p292: no please I'm cackling again! I've read that quote so many times and finally understand it properly 🤣

I feel as though I am dreaming away my days, restless, never fully awake.

"I knew you liked her," says Locke. "That's why I had to have her first. Do you remember the party in my maze garden? How I kissed her while you watched?"
"I recall that your hands were on her, but her eyes were on me" Carden returns.

"Greetings, Your Majesty, you betraying toad."

"The only danger anyone has ever been in at a Council meeting is of being bored to death."

"It was terrifying watching you fall. I mean, you're generally terrifying, but I am unused to fearing for you."
"Mortals are fragile."
"Not you. You never break."

"I didn't mean to hurt you. I didn't think I could hurt you. And I never thought you would be afraid of me."
"Well, I was hurt, and yes, you scare me. You've always scared me. I was afraid of you even when you were tied to that chair in the Court of Shadows. I was afraid of you when I had a knife to your throat. And I am scared of you now."

"Be welcome on the Isle of Ismire. To you, I offer honey wine and the hospitality of my table. But to traitors and oath breakers, I offer my queen's hospitality instead. The hospitality of knives."

"It's you I love. I spent much of my life guarding my heart. I guarded it so well that I could behave as though I didn't have one at all. Even now, it is a shabby, worm-eaten, and scabrous thing. But it is yours. You probably guessed as much. But just in case you didn't."
I can't believe he just said that and then just walked out, leaving me reeling. I am going to strangle him.
You love him, too. You've loved him since before you were a prisoner of the Undersea. You loved him when you agreed to marry him.
Once this is over, I will find the bravery to tell him.

When he kisses me, I feel as though I can finally breathe again.

Unfortunately a slightly lackluster ending to this series. I just felt like there wasn't quite enough plot things going on - too much of a continuation of Maddoc just being annoying without it staying interesting. Also, I didn't understand why we should be so quick to forgive Taryn? Sure I guess she married an asshole (that's on her!), but did she really earn Jude's forgiveness? Imo no!

The ending curse twist was interesting I guess but also easily resolved. Idk I guess I just expected to have a little more devastation in this series in general?

A friend send me Cardan's letters and WHY were those not included in every edition?! Gods that was the best part and it wasn't even included!

I thought this was a different way of ending the series. Going into the book, the other two books whilst feeling different were more tied together in their political drama angle of the book. This felt different to as it was less focused on the political aspect, and more on the fantastical areas. This lead to what felt like it went pretty fast read once we got back in the world of Faerie.
Whilst I would have liked more political drama in this book, I think this fantastical view fits much better as anything more political might have felt too much like the second book. I still had a lot of fun with this book and thought it still had solid characters and interactions that drew me into the series to begin with. I could also see how the ending ties into the the spin off series around Oak. I thought it was fun to see. I really liked how everything was wrapped up and it felt like a happy ending but also a realistic one for this world.

I can see why people didn't want to leave this world once they finished the series. It has just been a lot of fun reading and following these characters.

How could this be anything but a 5 ⭐️ review?? This was the perfect balance of love and lore. It wasn’t too much romance, definitely a slow burn. The main plot was also very good and really well thought out, and while it could have been confusing and political, it was written in a way so that it was not. The climax almost broke me, I cared that much. 11/10 would recommend!
