I went into this book not having high expectations due to retellings rarely being done well. But, as it was said to contain two of my favourite things, fantasy and LGBTQIA+ characters, I decided to give it a shot. This book absolutely exceeded my expectations!
This book is a Snow White retelling, with a twist. Focusing on pirates and saving a princess whilst incorporating some wonderful fantasy elements that deviate from the original… It was just so enjoyable! The characters were so well rounded that you couldn’t help but love them (or dislike them in the case of those who are deemed to be villains). I loved the mix of LGBTQIA+ identities that were included, the sapphic romance between Gwen and Morgen and the bond Gwen and Jacques shared. The fantasy elements were great, and I do love a good fantasy. But fantasy and LGBTQIA+? These two things combined is just a wonderful combination.
The only issue I had was some grammatical errors and the ending feeling a bit rushed, which is why I haven’t rated it five stars.
