It was fine. It kept my attention and when it was good it was good. But certainly had some moments that go from 0-100 and make you wonder if you missed something and the ending left a lot to be desired.

This is achingly bittersweet (like all her books) but is the first one I want to revisit over and over. The LA atmosphere, the quiet battles for your own soul, the drinks, the plants -- all of it is immersive and lovely.

I feel like this story had a lot of potential and was off to a compelling start with the story beginning with Sara’s backstory. However, the two main characters’ stories ended up being truncated and hodge podged between each other’s. In turn, this story is disjointed, with Sara being a more fleshed out and complex character than Emilie.

There was no real development in the two main character’s relationship to each other, or even anything in the prose that convinced me as to how instantaneous their connection may have been.

Overall, I believe this book could have made a compelling story if the author have zeroed in on one character, which if I were to choose it would be Sara.

P.S. This book initially caught my eye because I thought there would have been some reference to Puerto Rican poet Sandra Maria Estevez’s book of poetry also titled “Yerba Buena”. Please be aware that there isn’t, lol.

Rounding up a touch for this extremely readable love story between young people finding their way. Featuring: growing up too fast, heroin.

Take a shot every time the book’s title is mentioned.

This book made me irrationally angry for it’s wasted potential.

There are some questions that stand the test of time. What came first, the chicken or the egg? Why did the chicken cross the road? (Not sure why there are so many chicken questions???) Do I like an audiobook because Julia Wehlan narrates it, or does Julia Wehlan only narrate realllyy good books?

Society may eventually answer questions #1 and #2, but #3 will always remain a mystery. I guess I just have to listen to more Whelan narrations to find out.

I absolutely adored this book, finished in two days. What a beautiful and honest story of two women loving each other and the path it takes to get there. I thought Nina Lacour did a great job of describing how loving someone doesn’t always feel like a ‘right choice’ and how people are so fully flawed and make silly decisions—and yet, sometimes you just keep going because you love them. Even if it doesn’t make sense. It’s as simple as that.
