This was such a hard yet empowering read.

Official content warnings: Bullying, Rape (aftermath, not on-page), Sexual assault (a slap on the butt), sexual harassment

It says aftermath not on page, but I felt like the memories were pretty graphic. I’d also add PTSD.

I really did enjoy this book. I loved the main character and the found family and all.

It just felt a bit too short despite being a pretty average length. I wish that we had gotten to spend a bit more time with Ari’s parents, and some of the ending felt a bit rushed.

(I still really enjoyed this book! It’s just easier to write about negatives than positives)

Sonora Reyes really is the writer that I wish I had growing up, but who I’m beyond grateful exists as an author now. This is such an important book in so many ways and I really respect them for their courage, attention and care that they put into writing a story that centers sensitive topics.

I didn't love this as much as I loved The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School. Mainly because I felt as that this book is a bit too long for the amount of material inside, some moments felt too drawn out or repetitive. And while I can’t blame the characters for thinking like teenagers, because they are teens,  some of the plot points really had me going “did you really think that would work?”. But those are just minor flaws in an otherwise wonderful book and I wasn’t disappointed in this sophomore novel from Sonora Reyes.

This book was absolutely beautiful. The characters were all written beautifully and I saw parts of myself in each one of them. The experience of being neurodivergent, queer, and a victim of sexual assault were all represented so beautifully. I truly felt more seen in this book than many of the other books I have read with similar concepts. Panic and shutdowns are dealt with so well in this book. It truly helped me feel less alone in my experience and story.

Literally 5 million stars. Please note that this deals with rape/SA. I absolutely love the main characters. I’ve never read about a semi-mute autistic person so this was so interesting to read from their perspective! Such an amazing sound family trope, even if they came together for such a horrible reason. I’m so glad they all have each other and that
Luis Ortega was brought to justice!!

This is the YA revenge fic I needed. Wish all the real life SA stories ended in such a satisfying way. Queer and neurodivergent POC  characters kick ass.
