With amazing descriptions of mountain landscapes of Himalayas, Ruskin Bond has given us a glimpse of the lives of those village people uphills in this elegant children's tale. There is beauty not only the outward one which, I think, the umbrella symbolizes but also inward which we realise as the situations take turn towards the end. There is greed, there is envy but there is also the strength of attachment and the wonder of goodwill. One of the most wholesome children's stories no doubt.

Every once in a while when life gets me down, I read this book and it takes me right back to my childhood and reminds me of the simplicity of life…
