This honestly felt like the same but different to the cruel prince. The betrayal was so mellow and nothing really. The romance or angst wasn't there and I just don't get the hype lmao. Only thing I liked is how gruesome the Fae are

I did enjoy Black's writing as always but the characters did not draw me in like Jude and Cardan did. I was intrigued by their personalities but in the end there was too much of the not telling someone, a trope I think is overused by now, and I was confused by the romance.
Suren and Oak were neither together nor only friends yet they did not say a word about it, like? And why are the love interests always taller than the protagonists? I am kind of tired of it.</spoiler >
It was a nice read and I will continue the story but it cannot compare to Jude's story.

Read Jan 2023 and March 2024

I love Holly Black’s Folk of the Air books so much. Wren’s character was tragic in that trilogy, , so it was easy to empathize with her, especially since this title was written from her POV. Wren has really low self-esteem, so it’s easy to see that she’s not a reliable narrator, but I’d have liked to see some of Oak’s POV. I would have been happy with Maddock rotting in prison, too, but that’s just me. The cliffhanger ending is tough.

It's Holly Black. Of course, I am going to give it 5 stars. Another absolutely beautiful book that ends with your jaw on the floor.
