I'm not much for the detective/murder mystery genre but there is something about the way Louise Penny writes each of her characters that I just adore.

"The Cruelest Month" takes is another of the "Three Pines" mysteries. Armand Gamache is summoned to the quaint little town to solve the murder of the beloved--at least so we're led to believe--Madeline Favreau. During a seance, Madeline is "scared to death", with a room full of people sitting front and center to her demise. As Gamache digs deeper into the life of Madeline and those who knew and loved her, he finds there's so much more lurking beneath the surface, and it's up to him to figure out how to put all the broken (literal and figurative) pieces back together.

As with the first two books, the town of Three Pines is as much a part of the story as the residents themselves. Clara, Gabri, Olivier, Beauvoir, etc., all return to assist Gamache, each in a unique way, in finding the answers to not only this murder but in getting to the bottom of a personal vendetta from his own life that's threatening to destroy the peaceful existence he's come to embrace.

There is no denying Penny's grasp on humanity. If there's a thread running throughout this particular story it's jealousy and how it eats away at your soul from the inside out if left unchecked. It's the humanity within these stories that makes them so enthralling to read and keeps me coming back for more.

Another gorgeous mystery by Louise Penny. I think I enjoyed this one the most so far. It’s creepy, atmospheric, and filled with the characters I’ve already loved in the previous two books. Adding the layer of a side story about the Sureté and Gamache’s story only increased my enjoyment. 4.5 stars.

Questo giallo non mi ha colpita come avrei voluto. La premessa è molto accattivante, ma il tutto forse doveva essere più breve per mantenere al meglio ritmo e suspance.

I love these books! Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is a straight, Muggle version of Albus Dumbledore. It’s so fun to get to know these characters through so many books. And the writing is very well done. Some of the lines absolutely blow me away, they’re written so well.
