If cats disappeared from the world was not entirely what I expected. Then again I wasn't sure what I thought before picking this up lol. A lovely story based on a young man who gets an awful diagnosis and then that night visited by the devil himself. The man strikes a deal to extend his life by one day. This story has several moments of heart warming moments and then heart wrenching in places (tears were shed at the end). I found I started to reflect on my own life more after reading this, the journey, highs and lows and wondered if I would have made the deal or not.

This was a fun quick read. I really enjoyed the premise but at times the writing was a bit corny. That could be a product of translation, but I still think it kind of leaned a bit too heavily on some pop-culture type references. I do think there is some interesting ideas in the book, and honestly would have liked to see them fleshed out a bit more. Otherwise I thought this was a good story and I liked how things wrapped up. It also is only 170 pages so it is incredibly quick to read.

Finishing this book had me feeling a little bit sad but mostly underwhelmed.
I love the big/heavy concepts the author explored but the story seemed overly simplistic and repetitive - however this may be due to translation.
I felt the story line between days was quite disjointed and for me resulted in a lack of interest until the last couple days where the author finally talks about the relationship between humans and cats. There were also a couple things that made the story feel gimmicky to me: names such as lettuce, cabbage, and Aloha…
Overall this plot could be summarised by the quote: “In order to gain something, you must lose something”.

This book let me down. I did feel the translation was weird and off, but after reading far enough into the book you can recognize that’s not the main problem. The characters are cliché and the protagonist was pretty selfish. I find the little funny/quirky moments were very annoying and made me find parts of the story insufferable. The devil being this quirky guy who just laughed and wore stupid shirts while obviously trying to appear as this comedic relief in this grief story…very annoying . It did not fit the vibe of the book at all.
One thing I did like about this story was it focused on the acceptance of life when facing death, and not trying to find a grand or explicit ‘purpose’ for why you live. It was a compelling concept to read about.
Overall this book was, honestly, just frustrating.
