The first half is bland, and felt empty, and didn't set things up quite as well as more thoroughly-developed chapters would've done.  The second half, when a certain character is introduced, delivers some nice poignancy.

A very quick read.

If cats disappeared from the world was not entirely what I expected. Then again I wasn't sure what I thought before picking this up lol. A lovely story based on a young man who gets an awful diagnosis and then that night visited by the devil himself. The man strikes a deal to extend his life by one day. This story has several moments of heart warming moments and then heart wrenching in places (tears were shed at the end). I found I started to reflect on my own life more after reading this, the journey, highs and lows and wondered if I would have made the deal or not.

Finishing this book had me feeling a little bit sad but mostly underwhelmed.

I love the big/heavy concepts the author explored but the story seemed overly simplistic and repetitive - however this may be due to translation.

I felt the story line between days was quite disjointed and for me resulted in a lack of interest until the last couple days where the author finally talks about the relationship between humans and cats. There were also a couple things that made the story feel gimmicky to me: names such as lettuce, cabbage, and Aloha…

Overall this plot could be summarised by the quote: “In order to gain something, you must lose something”.

The story is quite simple and more like pondering about death and the value of one's own life, as well as the relationships we have as humans.

If Cats Disappeared from the World takes readers through the final week of the main character after learning he has a terminal illness. The news seems to paralyze him until an entity calling itself the Devil, wearing his face, appears before him. The Devil challenges our narrator to think about things he could live without permanently  in order to have just one more day to live. This proposal has a deeper effect on the main character as he recalls memories of his life and the things and people he's lost and those who meant the most to him.

In my opinion, If Cats Disappeared from the World will challenge its readers to think about their own mortality and the moments in their lives that meant to most in the moment but from afar seem of little consequence. My love for translated books continues to grow and  this book is a very good example of self-reflection and examining details of our lives that truly matter and bring us happiness.

I read this book for a PBT in Reading and Writing (Grade 11), and it was for a book review. Man did this book made me cry. When that Chapter name "A world without Me" appeared, it hit me HARD and that's when I started to become emotional. Maybe it's because I myself have also thought about this, so reading this main character say that... it really did strike a nerve to me. And GOODNESS the cliffhanger ending, I NEEDED CLOSUREEE

Good book and I didn't expect it to be a bit philosophical, it was really an interesting read and it put you into perspective of things, on what they would be like if they didn't exist in our world. What would it be like; would it stay the same or would there be some changes?

I hold this book dear to my heart...
