I love all of Kevin Henkes books but this is one of my favorites. The experience at school and home is so relatable . There are also many connections to building a classroom community. It also is a great way to teach about names.

PB 25. This is one of my all time favorite children's books. I think this would be a perfect beginning of the school year pick for younger children. The love the depiction of the relationship between Chrysanthemum and her teacher. Mrs. Twinkle is the teacher that every kid dreams of, and most kids can relate to having a life-changing teacher. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. I can't wait to read this to my classroom and to my own kids.

As a child, this book helped me come to terms with having an uncommon name. Great for teaching kids about uniqueness, originally and self-confidence!

Chrysanthemum is a book about a young mouse who has to learn to cope children at school teasing her because of her name. This book is packed full of great social-emotional development. Firstly, even though the book's characters are all mice, it still is a great example of culturally diverse literature as many of the mice are different colors. Second, Chrysanthemum grows up in a home full of love that shows with two parents and is a great example of one type of family for children. Thirdly, this book deals heavily with bullying, something that many children face or will face in school. This book gives great examples of familial and teacher support in the face of bullying and resolves itself in a peaceful manner. Additionally, your little one will be learning all kinds of new vocabulary from this book!
