Forgotten Voices is a collection of anecdotes, memories and stories told by those with direct experience of war, holocaust, ghettos, camps, liberation and displacement. They are graphically honest and there are distressing images throughout too.

Although we hear from various people multiple times, each voice tells one recollection in each chronological section, a paragraph at a time. You may read about a child hiding in a cellar and wonder if they escaped capture only to see their name again later at Bergen-Belsen.

There are Polish, German, Hungarian, Czech, British and American voices. There are Jewish voices, Gypsy voices and Christian voices. There are men, women, children, soldiers and faith leaders.

These are powerful, moving, distressing, shocking, hopeful and inspiring stories. Stories of resistance, survival, desperation, revenge and reflection. Yes, it's a difficult read but it isn't all bleak. There is humour and light to be found. There is strength and courage.

It is a wonderful, informative book but the format dissects the lived experiences a little too much. I would like to hear, at least in some instances, a person's story start to finish and not in small chunks.
