i feel like the door took a little piece of me with it by the time i'd finished reading. what is there that i can even say? this book is distilled emotion and i was unprepared for it. despite the ominous (but beautiful) opening chapter, i was lulled into a false sense of comfort by whimsical emerence and her amusing idiosyncrasies. what i got by the end of the story was an emotional journey i hadn't bargained for. an absolute favorite. i need to read everything magda szabó's written, by like tomorrow.

3 phrase review:
- found family
- life shaped by impactful (traumatising?) events
- coping mechanisms

She told us as much about herself as she saw fit, but generally said little, like a real mother whose past has become immaterial in her total concern for the future of her children.

Everyone trusted Emerence, but she trusted no-one; or, to be more precise, she doled out crumbs of trust to a chosen few - [...] - and stray morsels to a few others.
