This is the story of Michael, a half Jamaican half Greek boy who never quite fit in with the social gender norms. Starting from are 6 through his first year of college, the book explores his coming out to his peers and his evolution until The Black Flamingo, a drag queen of the highest esteem.

Told in verse, this book should be read on kindle or with book in hand. There was an element that I felt missing when listening to it on audio, only to later realize it was being told verse. (I just thought it was overly simplistic sentence structure.)

Michael finding his tribe and finding his voice and ultimately finding acceptance with himself was an enjoyable read.

I live in Florida where a school library book can be quarantined and ultimately banned on one parent’s say so. I read The Black Flamingo as part of the review committee deciding the fate of this book. While it isn’t for everybody, it absolutely should be on the library shelf for those that would like to read it.

So this book being written in verse was a little outside my comfort zone as I've never read a book in this format before and it took a little getting used to but once I was used to it I got fully immersed in the story. The actual layout of the book being in verse helped tell the story. I loved how the author used note and text forms for the writing in places and how he also reversed the writing to be white and the pages to be black to make more of an impact. The illustrations within the book were beautiful and I particularly liked how as we followed Michael through the different stages in his self discovery the feathers spread further across the pages
·
I don't want to give much about the story away but I really liked following Michael as he discovers who he is and watching him grow from a boy to a man
·
This was a wonderful book about self discovery and acceptance and being true to who you and although my review won't do this book any justice it's definitely one I recommend everybody reads 5⃣⭐

I loved this. My brain just ate this up. It was beautifully written with a great coming of age story and an important message on being unapologetically yourself as you keep figuring yourself out.

I've always hated the stereotypes and expectations set by society about who people should be and what is normal. I yearn for the day where everyone can be peaceful and fully themselves without any judgement or second thought.

What a great debut YA novel.

"So who is The Black Flamingo?"
"He is me, who I have been, who I am, who I hope to become. Someone fabulous, wild and strong. With or without a costume on.”

I really enjoyed this story. My only complaint would be that, because this encompasses Michael's life from age 3 through 19 in a book that's not very long at all, it didn't expand on some moments deeply enough. Some experiences could have been dwelled on for longer, which I believe would have made their impact bigger. Other than that, this was a good read
