This is a tricky one to review. O'Connor is a fabulous writer, there's no doubt about that. I'm not a huge short story reader and she really sucked me in. These particular stories, though, are hard to read. Not difficult, hard. Are her white characters so racist and bigoted on purpose, is she trying to make a point? Or was she really that racist? Maybe both? I'm glad I finally got around to reading this, but it's definitely not something I'd pick up again.

Didn't finish the whole collection, read about half of the stories. I got tired of the same old predictable events with horrible characters and racist writing, and I usually can understand works that are "products of its time" and can look past certain things for the historical value. I only intended to read the titular story, so I'm surprised I got as far as I did.

Each story contains racial slurs. When I started I thought it would not be so continuous throughout, but the fact is, Flannery was poisoned by the racism of her times. However, like so many before me, I was still completely captivated by her story-telling abilities, and imagery especially of her characters. Some of the stories in this collection completely shook me (namely The River, A Circle in the Fire, and Good Country People) and that's why it still gets a 2.5
