I first read this series back when it first came out, and I fell in love with it. It was different from all the books that were popular back then, and my first time reading dark fantasy about angels (I still can't believe it's been over 10 years!).

Reading it again now, my only complaint is how young Penryn is. Growing up makes you realize how YOUNG a 17-year-old really is. It's true she had to 'grow up' mentally and take care of her younger sister since their mother wasn't capable of doing so, but it still feels wrong how young she is. Especially when she's falling for an immortal angel.

I liked the characters, good and bad. They all seemed to have their own personalities and backgrounds, and didn't feel two-dimensional.

This was a fast-paced book; you're basically at the edge of your seat the entire time. Penryn's determination to save her sister forces her to join Raffe, an angel who's wings were cut off and who now has to walk back to where the angels are in San Francisco. Their alliance leads to an eventful trip full of danger, both from humans and monsters alike.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a dark fantasy series about angels and the end of the world.

None of the characters are likable. I couldn't understand how there was any chemistry between the two main characters and the protagonist was someone I couldn't root for.

This is definitely a twist on the YA dystopian genre. I honestly didn't think it would be as dark as it was for a YA novel. It starts off with a bang and doesn't stop. It's a sprint to the end and your adrenaline is going and there's just a hint of conspiracy to give it another layer. And that ending? gooseflesh and tingles on the back of my neck... yeesh!

Even though I liked it, I have a couple criticisms. One being the demonization of schizophrenia and the other being sl*t shaming.
Spoilerthe main character’s mother has schizophrenia and this is demonstrated by the mother being extremely violent and not mentally sound. It is hinted that in the past she injured her child in such a way that the child can no longer walk. The main character cannot reason with her mother. Much later in the story, the main character has to wear a revealing dress in order to get into the enemy lair. She refers to the outfit as sl*tty and judges the other women there who are wearing similar outfits in order to get the good graces of the enemy. It also is very anti-s*x work in that scene.<\spoiler> despite all this, i still liked the book and im excited to read the second one.
