3.2 stars: I have no complaints about this book but it definitely won't go down in history for me. A super fun one sitting read for Halloween though!

The Ex Hex is a sweet little second chance romance with a bit of snark and a lot of charm. The protagonist is a twee witch named Vivienne Jones, who somehow managed to land a gig teaching at a local liberal arts college despite not having a Ph.D. (*Laughs in dismal academic job market*).

Nine years ago, the summer of her freshman year of college (at the same half-magical/half-normie institution where she now teaches history to non-magical students), she had a fling with the almost annoyingly charming Rhys Penhallow, son of a powerful family of Welsh witches who happened to found both the town, Graves Glen, where Vivi lives and the college in which she teaches. After a summer of insta-love and a whole lot of sex in the way only teenagers can manage it, Rhys mentions that he has to go back to Wales to undo a betrothal that his father arranged for him. Vivi kicks him out in a fit of anger, proceeds to drink her body weight in vodka, aaaaaaaand drunkenly places a curse on Rhys.

In the present, Rhys's father sends him back to Graves Glen to fulfill the familial obligation of recharging the town's magic. When he returns and runs into Vivi, 9 years worth of resentment, attraction, and long-distance social media stalking spark between them, as does the curse.

When the curse spreads to the town's pool of magic, Rhys, Vivi, and her family must try to break it or face deadly consequences.

I thought the book was quite cute overall, and I'd gladly recommend it to anyone looking for

* Halloween vibes
* Enemies to lovers
* A mostly sweet romance with a hit of spice

This is a cute second chance romance with a dose of magic and Halloween thrown in.

It was perfect for my life right now - I’m busy and tired because of peak marathon training, election volunteering, and my team is in the World Series so I don’t have a lot of time and I am sleep deprived. This was the perfect thing that didn’t require much of me and could help me wind down when I needed to.

There’s a second one in this series which I don’t feel especially compelled to read but I might someday anyway.

This book just wasn't for me. I found the storyline, characters, and romance to be flat. Often we were told things (how smart the love interest was, how much chemistry the leads had, how quirky the characters were...), but not shown them. I found it hard to get through the book, and was completely uninterested in both the resolution to the main storyline, as well as the fate of the two leads.

This was a cute and quick, cheesy rom-com - adjacent to a Hallmark movie. After having finished a bunch of long fantasy books, I was ready for a palette cleanser. This really hit the spot and was what I needed to make sure that I didn’t fall into a reading slump.

It has a witchy aspect to it, but I wouldn’t say that it was so much so that you can’t read it anytime of the year. I didn’t feel like it was Halloween-heavy at all.

I think if you’re looking for something fast and easy, then this is for you.
