I’ve actually been in a serious book slump lately. I feel like I just can’t get more than a few chapters into a book before I realize it’s just not hitting the spot and I need to try something else. That was until I was sent Dirty Work by Chelle Bliss and Brenda Rothert to review. I’m a sucker for a romance with a politician but I was ready for a heroine who wasn’t an intimidated secretary.

I’m so glad I picked up this book, because I loved it! I’d never read anything by either Chelle Bliss or Brenda Rothert before but both seem to have quite a fan following separately. I can definitely say they were a solid writing partnership and I hope to read more by them together in the future. The writing transitioned well enough and each author gave Jude and Reagan a different tone and voice. While I didn’t know which author wrote which part, it was fairly clear when the style changed; regular readers of both authors will likely be able to pick it out.

If the idea of a book about politics is making you pause, you shouldn’t. This was simply a sweet, sexy story of two opposing candidates who should have been off limits to each other fighting their feelings while out on the campaign trail. The story seems like it’s going to start off as a classic “frenemies” to lovers but shifts gears pretty quickly to to be more like forbidden romance with a slow burn.

Jude is a veteran who is set on making a change and feels duty bound to run for office to fight for the rights of the regular citizen. He’s also a bossy, semi-alpha with a romantic streak and knows his feelings for Reagan aren’t worth fighting against. He didn’t waffle or fight his feelings for Reagan, I loved that he dove in with both feet even though being together could hurt both of their chances at election.

"Is it the thrill of the forbidden? Will you still want me once you've had me?"

He lowers his brows. "Once I've had you? You mean once we've fucked?"

I nod once.

A wolfish smile creeps across his face. "That's not having you, Reagan. To me, having you means you're mine, body, heart, and soul. It means we belong to each other."

I really liked Reagan at the beginning, she was strong and feminine but in no way a push over. She fought against the idea that her age made her inexperienced and that she was being elected on her name alone. So much of the first half focused on her wanting to be seen as hard working and not as someone falling back on her famous political family to build her own career. Whereas Jude was diving into a relationship with both feet Reagan was concerned about how it would work and she didn’t want to be perceived as compromising her integrity to reach her goals. Unfortunately, I felt that some of the decisions when made in the second half of the book didn’t match the Reagan we met in the first half of the book. To me, this made Jude a much stronger and more developed character than Reagan was.

Overall this was a great book with a sweet story that did a fantastic job at pulling me out of reading slump.

Reagan Preston and Jude Titan are political rivals.
Reagan comes from a political family .

Jude is an ex-soldier looking to get elected and change things for the better for the common man.
She is a Democrat, he is a Republican. They dislike each other without actually knowing one another.

But that changes when they meet …

Dirty Work shows us the dirty dealings of the political world.

We see the deals and the dirt but also the determination of two people to make a difference.
While they might have jumped to conclusions about their political rivals, both Reagan and Jude work hard to get elected.

As they continue the campaign trail, Reagan and Jude meet time and time again, they share personal experiences and develop a connection.

They start flirting via texts but don’t forget they are political rivals.
The attraction is there but so is the differences.

Read Dirty Work to see how they resolve the issues separating them and if they are strong enough to overcome the scandals on the way.

While I enjoyed the book, I was expecting the end result and was disappointed by it.

Great book, would be even better if they wouldn't catch feelings so soon (it kinda felt too insta-love for me)...at least at the beginning.

I was a little surprised that this was a political love story and I probably would have put this on my maybe someday list if I had know but I'm so glad I didn't. It's so much more than that, it is kind of an enemies to lovers story even if they weren't really enemies but everyone thought they should be.
I have to say I loved Jude from the beginning! He was a man that didn't play mind games, he knew what he wanted and he went for it. He was honest and had a goal and a plan and no matter how much it hurt others, he didn't sugar coat it, he said it like it was and not it a mean way at all. In the end this book had a great love story and was fairly hot too ;)

Narration was great... but that is no surprise with these two narrators!

No bueno to dirty work. No bueno at all. I read the synopsis of this book and thought, “Oh! That's different and should be fun to read. Two smart, passionate young people, both running for a Senate on opposing sides and falling for one another in the process. Should be filled with some intense debates, grimy politics, quick wit and everything else that comes along with the craziness that is a political campaign....” Instead I got the same old failed attempt at a hate at first sight romance thinly veiled as a political romance.

I hate to be cruel but the premise of this book was pretty damn interesting and had the potential to be really good but was instead wasted on a plot that was actually about unwarranted feelings, foreplay and basically written romance. You can't actually call this a political romance because there was barely any politics. When the two main characters, Reagan and Jude weren’t swooning over one another every chance they got, they were either participating in debates or fulfilling campaign duties. But rather than actually focusing on the campaign and things they wanted to change or affect in the government, they were too busy thinking up ways to sneak and see one another or trying to avoid being obvious about their feelings for one another. I found it quite annoying.

What I found most disappointing though, was Reagan and the way she carried her self and acted throughout the book. I was hoping she would be this strong, stubborn, slick tongued, political power house. Instead as soon as she laid on Jude, she turned into a little 12 year old girl swooning for the new kid on the block. Granted, Jude was just as gone for her as she was for him. The main difference was, he was able to keep their personal and professional loves separate. He didn't let his feelings for her affect the way he went for her during a debate. He didn't temper his responses to questions regarding her during Q&A's for fear of hurting her feelings. He was professional and kept his eye on the prize, which was winning the election. To me, it seemed that after just one look at Jude, Reagan's priority immediately switched. Utterly disappointing.

It wasn't all bad however. My issues with this book really falls on the fact that it had such great potential to be a great story with substance as well as a good romance novel and it only shook out to be barely just the one of those things. There were cute moments. When Jude and Reagan weren't being completely insufferable with their whirlwind secret romance, there were moments that I found entertaining and fun. But you can get entertaining and fun from any number of books and you can find ones that are written in a more believable and less insta-lovey way...

Overall, I could've done without reading this book. On the bright side, it was short, so I didn't waste too much of my time.

I loved this book! I do believe as a country we need to pull together. My favorite part was "In a country so dedicated to freedom, there should be more support and care given to the very men and women who defend that honor everyday." Loved Jude and Reagan's chemistry! So very hot!

3.5* Running for a US Senate seat to make her senator father proud, Reagan's determined to win...then she meets her opponent. Jude Titan is a decorated war hero on a mission to help other veterans. This was a sweet political enemies to lovers story.
