I had not been required to read this in high school as so many others have and did not know what to expect. I truly enjoyed the writing and have always loved the 20's era. It is hard to not give this 4 stars as some sections of the book are so beautifully written.

This is a bitter sweet story of a trying to go back to a time when you felt happiest. I had not expected the tragedy that was the ending. Although the narrator Nick is on the sidelines watching this love story you come to an understanding that this is a universal feeling. That anyone of us can be destroyed in a split second of bad judgement. Life is fleeting and happiness must be grabbed before it passes by. However there is also a tone that sometimes things that are lost should be forgotten. Looking into the past and not moving forward can be unhealthy and untrue to the person you have become.

Although parts of the book are slow moving it is a good read. The characters flit about their lives pretending to enjoy life more than they actually do. Putting on a good show for all their neighbors and friends, just as we understand the living in the 20's to be like.

I just love the delusional dreaminess of this whole thing - while simultaneously disliking almost every character. I rolled my eyes the entire time while also loving the extravagance and was honestly sad at the ending. This is just a weird book in terms of reactions, i’m glad i reread (listened to) it.

I have to agree with those that say this is among the best American novels. It was absolutely brilliant. I listened to the audio version of the book and I sought moments when I could steal some time to listen.

While F. Scott Fitzgerald is a fantastic writer, this is a not very good book that tells a terrible story. I have no idea how this is so highly regarded for anything other than Fitzgerald's writing skill.

The word I'm looking for is bewildered. That is what I feel about this book. Bewilderment. I get how this book gets a place on "classics" but I wasn't expecting the drama that was rubbed into my face. It was great.. i think. I still don't get the hype though. It would be very pretentious if I say that I really loved the story and I think I'm going to listen to a person who really loved this book after writing this review. I want to feel what they feel and I feel like I'm missing many things (too many feels).

This ain't thrilling for me. This didn't touched me either. It's a meh but I think this book deserves 3 stars.

I like this reading better than the other one I listened to. Don't know if that is just because it was second and the ideas stood out more but I only gave 3 stars to the other.
