Normally with sequels and prequels of major franchises I get nervous that they will be hastily produced cash grabs. But this is so well thought out and fleshes out the world of Panem through a lens we never really saw in the original trilogy. Snow was an interesting choice for the main character and narrator of the novel but through his perspective we see the Capital, the Games, and the Districts in a unique way. This book is more of a character study of how entitlement and prejudice and paranoia can become even more corrupt especially in the presence of an influence like Dr. Gaul. Snow has so many chances to change for the better but the way he justifies his actions to himself and the audience is an excellent example of an unreliable narrator.

I loved loved loved this goddamn book so much. I feel like it's an excellent portrayal of the ugly side of trauma and mental illness. It's tragic really how certain characters had every opportunity to make the right choice, and yet in the end made terrible choices instead. It's good, I think, to have sympathy for villains and understand how they became who they became. It's a good reminder that there is no biological or innate difference between us and the most terrible person in the world- it all comes down to choice in the end. Well done Suzanne, you have my heart.

If you’ve read the Hunger Games trilogy then you’ll enjoy this book. It follows the story of President Snow from his younger years. Definitely filled in some story line info for the trilogy. It’s obviously dark in theme like the trilogy so be prepared!
