I think sometimes people forget to think critically. Not every character needs to be liked and not every story needs to be morally good. If every story and every character was good, we would learn absolutely nothing. I think people are afraid to say they liked this book because the book is about what it takes to make a killer. It’s very dark, and that’s okay. Reading it doesn’t make you a killer. Like, that’s obvious I fear.

This book is confusing, and whenever you get to a point where you stop, look up, and say ‘I have no idea whats going on’ keep reading. We are untangling as we go along, Nakamura even says that this book is a puzzle! If you keep that in mind during those times when you have absolutely no idea whats happening, it will be so much more rewarding.

ok so like…

format and pace of the book is so beautifully done, it’s fun and eclectic and creates an almost episodic experience

women characters are not treated well in this story,
a big portion of the plot centers around violence inflicted on women and it can be difficult to read

this book is like a fun literary puzzle to delve into, if you can, i recommend knowing little to nothing going on and just experiencing the novel

The narrative puzzle is not interesting enough to think about. The narrative voices barely have any characterization, so it all feels flat and monotone.

Main theme is just men hurting/controlling women.

Just wrapped in an unnecessary narrative puzzle because hypnosis are identity switching are a main hook of the puzzle.

But everyone is just horrible so I have no connection to form any meanings to the “why” of the plot.

I ended up not caring.

I loved, “Last Winter We Parted” by this author. It is VERY dark but very satisfying.
And this novel was listed on a “Best Books of 2022 list” so I was eager to give it a try.

However, it was too dark for real enjoyment because the plot was convoluted. It is a very short book I pushed through hoping for a plot twist that never came.
