City of Mirth and Malice is the second and final book in the Vows of Vengeance duology. This book was more romantic fantasy leaning than fantasy romance.  The first book had great pacing, and kept my interest the whole time, whereas this one felt like a bit of a slog to get through. It also didn’t help that Nico and Milla are separated for a good portion of the beginning of this story. I like both the sub genres of fantasy romance and romantic fantasy so it’s disappointing that I didn’t connect as much with this second installment.

Bugger. This was one of my most anticipated reads and it was good but I struggled. I think if I read the first book following into this I may have loved it more. There was a recap from the first book at the start of this which I appreciated. It started strong but lost its way. Once Nico got Camilla back they jumped straight into business. I was hoping Nico would take care of and devour her but every time these two characters would get intimate someone always interrupted it was frustrating. Both these characters were strong in the first book but now a sappy mess in this second. Yes, Camilla went through a lot at the start but she cried many times. The ending for me seemed rushed and unfinished. Why go to all that hassle to get the book but not do anything with it? When Nonna fell why did Nico freak out and jump straight into business? He loved that woman and ran away. What is the extent of Camilla’s power? I feel like many things could have been explored more. Unfortunately, it fell flat for me and lost its spark from the first book.

OMG I was so stressed for this entire read but I usually take this as a good sign because it means I’m invested. Camilla and Nico have definitely won me over. I love them both separately and they make such a fantastic duo too. There was found family, a whole lot of the ‘touch my wife and d*e’ trope and so much action and adventure.

I really admire authors like Alexis L. Menard who can write really detailed fantasies but my pea brain cannot keep up. There was so much going on - almost too much. I adored all of the characters but I didn’t have the same love for the plot which might have been a me thing. It’s also very unlike me to say this but I wish this was a trilogy because the ending felt almost unfinished and it ended really abruptly.

I do think Alexis is a fantastic author and this world and characters she has created are wonderful. I can’t wait to see more from her.

Thanks so much Alexis for the ARC of COMAM! I am one lucky gal
