Definitely an emotional book, although it doesn’t start out that way. Bit philosophical: Although you can’t change the past you can change yourself and do better moving forward.

Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a wonderful and enjoyable read... until the last section. Usually emotional and inspiring, I felt blindsided by the terrible understanding of female anatomy or pregnancy as well as what I perceived as multiple grammatical errors by the translator. I actually found the way they regarded Kei's pregnancy and coordinated death (to save her and Nagere's baby) to be absolutely ridiculous and the sort of fictitious bullshit that only a male author would dream of writing.

Fittingly, this book benefits from going back for a second visit. There are lots of subtle, beautiful interactions between characters that I didn’t fully appreciate the first time, but that hit harder and made more sense the second time.

Give the time-travel mechanics some grace and you’ll have a better experience. Its both a cute story that tugs at heartstrings at times and a mental exercise in acceptance and releasing control of things that happened in the past.

3.5 stars overall: 3 for round one, 4 for round two.
