This is a good middle grades book that adults can enjoy. While the characters can be a bit 2 dimensional the story keeps you hooked. It is an easy, fast-paced read that fantasy fans will enjoy.

While this book wasn't for me it's perfect if your looking from something with early 2010's nostalgia. It has an unaware male lead, chosen one trope and family secrets. The magic system and lore probably gets better with the series but it was entertaining.
Personally I didn't like how long this book was, I felt like about 100 pages in the middle could have been removed and the story rewritten and it would have flowed perfectly. I honestly don't remember the middle because it wasn't important.
