when i first read the book i liked it a lot because i thought it was just supposed to be a psychological horror/thriller, but upon discovering that this is supposed to be a dark romance, i like it significantly less. protagonist is far from the main character, everyone is awful, and there are so many missed opportunities for genuine character development. the romance is the most insufferable part of the book, but it was tolerable when i thought it was meant to be a horror element. so if you just pretend to not know you’re reading a colleen hoover book, this is a solid 3.5 for simplicity and tropes

I think I’m team manuscript.

I enjoyed this! It wasn’t asking creepy as I was expecting(people made it sound so creepy). I was intrigued and wanted to see what was going to happen, but I was honestly mostly in this for the romance honestly. Some parts of this were very hard and disturbing to read. I don’t love the ending it just felt kind of rushed idk. It was enjoyable, but I didn’t find anything shocking tbh.

What a story! The highlight of this book is by far the creative and disturbing storyline. It’s quick, easy, and tense from beginning to end. Such a quick read that I definitely felt like the story could have been developed with more detail and character development to be even more dark and engrossing. It’s at times like these that I wish every author could unfold a story like Stephen King.

This is a story where the characters are not lovable. Not one of them. Even the child in the story seems creepy. I honestly did not know who I was rooting for, if anyone, in this book. This, along with the very disturbing storyline, makes this book unique like no other.

SPOILERS: Although Verity is clearly the “antagonist” throughout the book, there is something seriously disturbing about Jeremy and Lowen and their behavior. The lines are blurred between who is right and wrong.

The best part of the book is the manuscript. I often found myself bored when reading from Lowen’s perspective which is why I did not read this book as fast as I could have.

I thought I knew how it was going to end, but the letter definitely was a surprise. I love how the author creates an ending where we get to decide what we believe. I definitely was not believing of the letter, but it is gives the reader the opportunity to believe it, or imagine what it would mean if either alternative is possible.
