Solid follow-up to Traitor's Blade, however some of the twists and turns were fairly obvious. Minor gripe as the characters and dialogue are still fantastic.

Probably a tad bit long, and some unnecessary traveling. (Also the torture was too much for my liking. I am a wimp, yes.) But, other than that absolutely amazing from start to finish.

This is a very entertaining book with some very obvious shortcomings. The main character is always described as very smart and the one to figure things out, but he is constantly written as very stupid and is most of the time the last one to figure something out. Most of the reveals in the book are also very telegraphed and as a reader you can guess them from a mile away. Another thing that got on my nerves at times was that every thing needed to be explained 2 or 3 times over. Just to make sure we as a reader got it.

On to the good things then. Even though the characters are sometimes a bit dimwitted they are very nice to spend time with. Their relationships are very nice to read about. You can really feel the friendship or the mistrust between them. Also the action scenes are a joy to read. These alone makes this a book worth reading. And even though the story is quite predictable, I really enjoyed the story.

Wow. This was an incredible read. I read de Castell's Spellslinger series first, which I enjoyed very much, before moving on to the Greatcoat series. Joe Jameson is an excellent narrator for both series.
But Greatcoats is impressing me in a way that Spellslinger didn't. The depth of characters is shared between the books, but this book routinely took turns I didn't expect. de Castell leads you to thinking one thing will happen and following a very different path indeed.

There is a detailed graphic scene near the end that I had to skip through (CW: sexual assault & violence). Honestly ordinarily that would be a deal breaker for me, and I understand if it is for anyone else. But the narrative really pushes me forward to keep reading and seeing what's going on down the line for this cast.

The first book in this series was good, but this was what really sold on this series. The friendship between Falcio, Kest and Brasti is what really makes me love this series, as does the banter between them. A couple of the plot twist I had figured out, but that didn't make this any less enjoyable.

TW: violence, torture, sexual assault
