This was a pleasant surprise. I did not enjoy the first book I tried by Katie Meyer, because I didn't like the characters. Not so this time around! I picked this up because the heroine works for the FWC - she's a law enforcement officer, and it's her job to protect Florida's wildlife. What's not to like about that? Because of unresolved issues with her father, Sam has been struggling with personal relationships, and would much rather spend her time with animals or hiking in the wilderness. When a poaching call introduces her to Dylan, who works at an animal rescue, her life is turned upside down.

I loved the resolution of this story. Sam, a woman in a largely male field, has had to fight to be taken seriously, and has had to be better than her peers. Her big weakness is self-confidence, and that causes her to have difficulties forming relationships with others, something that very important in her line of work. She has to have the support of the community in order to effectively perform her job, and that isn't something that comes easily to her. With Dylan's help, as well as assistance from newly made friends, she overcomes her self-doubts and finally learns how to trust herself and others. Satisfying read.
