I’m always on the lookout for books that are themed for various holidays and are also a bit different and so of course I love the Gingerbread Hag paranormal cozy mystery series which features wonderful holiday-themed goodies. Valentine’s Day takes center stage this time with yummy offerings like croissant hearts with raspberry “blood”, chocolate dipped cookies, rhinoceros cookies and tomato bisque… I’m getting hungry already! In this third installment, there’s a sickly chinchilla (oh Maurice, you know you’re my favorite), and love is in the air with Valentine’s gifts and stories of Irish love triangles (and maybe some current day love possibilities as well.)

Hedy’s bed and breakfast is in danger of being shut down. And that’s not the only threat she may face. I always love spending time in this world and with these characters, particularly the fun and unusual cast of supernatural characters we don’t often see in other books. A Rougarou, a draugar? This went in all sorts of fun directions I didn’t see coming! And perhaps Cupid might have even found time to pay a brief visit to Hedy just for Valentine’s Day. You’ll have to read and find out.

I absolutely love this entertaining series that combines the comforting feel of a good cozy mystery with fantasy elements that are always surprising and fresh. The author delights in combing the world's cultures for lesser known mythological creatures and tales and is adept at folding them into her own unique universe seamlessly. Hedy's life becomes ever more complicated with each entry in the series, and this one is no exception as she finds herself on one side of a twisted love triangle and is threatened with the shutdown of her beloved waystation, a sort of bed and breakfast safe house for travelling supernatural beings. Like all good cozies, you enjoy spending more time with the characters and are left anxious for the next installment to see what happens next. The series is best read in order as each story builds on the previous and rewards the loyal reader with seeing the author's vision and characters expand and grow. Highly recommend for fans of mysteries with an original take on the supernatural.
