Ok, as books go these are all about on the same page quality wise, so it’s the standard book at this book.

The one thing I am very tired of in this series, is it’s bad guys. What is this like 4 books in a row that the politician did it? Don’t get me wrong I love that message but also, it’s getting to predictable.

also I feel cheated that I didn’t get a proper reunion for Niki and Cynthia but whatever.

Yes, these books were written as a marketing device for a TV show. Yes, they were written as fluff, nothing more than lowbrow, populist amusement. But they had a cohesion and comfortable sequent formula that was like eating a pop-tart. The characters, as cartoonish as they were, developed and grew and felt almost real. Had. Felt. Because the series stumbled in High Heat. And Heat Storm took that downward momentum and hit the nitro. Heat Storm is officially the Nikki Heat novels jump-the-shark moment. And Storm is Cousin Oliver. Damn you, Castle (wink, wink, nod, nod) for writing a 10th book and damn my obsessive-compulsive need to finish out any series I start. Maybe in Crashing Heat Nikki wakes up and Bobby Ewing is in her shower...

It’s 12:30 a.m. you all are getting a real review when I wake up but I really really liked it and it was definitely one of the best decisions to wait 2 years to read this book.

Read for Book Roast's Magical Readathon: NEWTs Exams. Subject: Defense Against the Dark Arts, A Level. (Last in a Series)

Someone watching might have thought any group of people with that much to celebrate was coming to some long-awaited conclusion of a great chain of events -- like a television show going through its series finale.

But, truly, this was not the end for Heat and Storm.

This was only the beginning.

NOPE. IT'S NOT. IT'S THE END. THE. END.

Sung to the tune of the white rabbit's song from Alice in Wonderland:

I'm done
I'm done
I'm done I'm done I'm done
No more of this fuckery, no more!
I'm done I'm done I'm done

Have I mentioned that if the TV show was as bad as these books, it never would've made it past season two? Even with Nathan Fillion's beautiful face helming it?

I AM DONE and I never have to read the words 'ruggedly handsome' EVER AGAIN. EVER.

Woooooooooooooo!

It still amazes me that a book series that got started as a bit of a jokey spin-off to a tv series (Castle) turned out to be so good! All of the books — this one included — read like episodes of Castle. And since the tv series has ended, I’m very happy the book series has continued. It’s a great way to dive back into that world. Book #1 was a bit mediocre, but they have just been getting better and better ever since. This 9th one did not disappoint!
It’s fun to discover little details in the book that harken back to the tv series. Like the office building being called The Marlowe, Heat being offered a prestigious job in government, or someone saying “You have no idea..!” Little nuggets like that made me smile.
The the Beckett/Heat character is also just awesome. You can’t help but root for her and she is very well written.
Really the only downside to the book was that it was a little bit predictable who ‘The Serpent’ was and also that the person who turned out to be the bad guy was gonna end up being the bad guy even though the writer tried to make them come off as trustworthy. But that didn’t make the book any less enjoyable. And the wild goose chase after the red herring was actually kind of fun too.
Can’t wait to dig into the next (and possibly final) book..!

Sadly, much like the show that inspired it, the ending was underwhelming. ‬It had so much potential, but it was wasted. Too much Storm, not enough Heat.
