I have fallen in love with the idea of blood-remembering.

Rilke examined love from so many angles in his life and this collection of his musings was transformative for me. I look at my own relationship through a clearer lens and I admire how Rilke's wisdom has impacted me so many years after their writing. His writings on the loss of love are also incredibly impactful and although they aren't relevant to me now, I reflected back on past relationships and how valuable this book would have been to me in those times of loss and difficult breakups.

I usually adore Rilke and I assumed this would be the case after I fell in love with “Letters to a Young Poet” (which every person with an artistic soul should read). However, I think issues lied with this one because I didn’t really like the translator, he seemed to link everything back to sex which I was unsure if this is what Rilke was really talking about. I ended up skipping his essay portions.

This was way more "considerations" than I was hoping for and not enough "translations." I also found the selection of poems a bit odd - at various points, Mood pulled single liners and generally seemed to pull snippets of poems that discussed love out of the context of a fuller work so meaning was lost. As a result, it was difficult for me to get into the poetry that was there, and my poetic flow kept being disrupted by boring reflections by the editor. I found his commentary distracted from rather than enhanced Rilke's work.

Rilke is a force to be reckoned with and this small volume gives the reader a lot to think about. Very quick read on the face of it, but poetry demands to be re-read over and over.
