I remember thinking this book was great when I first read it 20 some years ago. This time through it didn't do much for me. I couldn't even remember what had moved me so much then.

Second time through and it just gets better. Solid teaching and leaves much room for learning. Simple and succinct.

Every era must get their own Christian apologetics. Some apologists do write for the ages, for example, Saint Paul is still relevant 2,000 years later. C. S. Lewis seems to be surviving more than the twentieth century. However, it seems to me that some Christian writers are so tuned into what their readers need that the next generations may not find them helpful. I wonder what will happen with Rob Bell and Richard Foster among others in the next 20 or 50 years.
J. B. Phillips spoke to many people. This book was published in the early 1950's and I believe that many lives were changed by Phillip's words. He does put his finger on many of our problems - we can only see God through our human eyes and so we try to describe the undescribable with our puny ideas.
However, I did not find much new here. One of my pastors has often quoted from Phillips and so I felt like I had heard this all before. I am not sorry to have read this, but I have found more to think about in contemporary apologetics. This book is sixty years old and a lot has happened since then.
I would recommend this short book to those who have heard of Phillips, but not experienced his ideas. Also, I would suggest some of Phillips ideas could be new for new Christians or those who are concerned about placing limits on God. Phillips does help us see through our limits.
