“Dim Sum for Everyone” follows one family to a dim sum restaurant and explains how the experience works. Readers get introduced to the different types of dim sum available at the restaurant and the history of dim sum. The end papers contain the pictures and names of ingredients used to create dim sum. The illustrations are expansive and cover most of the page. Readers are treated to a close up view of a dim sum cart. Dim Sum for Everyone could be used to explore foods from other cultures. Teachers could bring in a food that might originate in China but now has become Americanized.

Simple text and bright pictures. I liked learning about dim sum through the short explanation in the back of the book.

Brief text describes dim sum, perfect for preschoolers or new readers. Wonderful 2 page note at the end explaining history and traditions.

I read this book, because some people want it to be banned for absolutely no reason.

This is a short, sweet book, that isn’t as informative as it is sharing a cultural tradition. I would say the bulk of this book is for my preschooler, where the snippet towards the back is a bit more informative on what this tradition is and would be better comprehension for my second grader.

I found the illustrations lovely, and I generally like Grace Lin’s books so I have little qualms about this one.

Four stars because I think it could’ve been longer.

A great story about food and family at a dim sum restaurant. Dim sum is a Chinese custom of serving small dishes of food.

I had way too much fun picking out pretty picture books about food at the library yesterday. Cataloging them here for next year.

Follow up for family/food unit. Perfect level and subject for my newcomers. As always, they were elated and found it hi-larious that Miss Rebecca had a book with Chinese words. Helped them own the English names for some familiar things. I wish it had something accessible to the kids like a "menu" at the end with pictures/names of dishes instead of the tiny print history of dim sum.

ETA - I just noticed it totally DOES have a menu guide! Duh. +1 star!

We read this during a presentation that our ESL kids were giving on their home countries. Two are from China, and they really enjoyed listening to the story and telling us what some Chinese characters meant. I think what was best about this book within this context was how it gave the Chinese students an opportunity to teach and talk about their heritage in front of their friends.

Others say that they think the style is too cartoony, but it's a book intended for small children? I'm not sure what you're expecting.
