Bit of a weak ending, doesn't massively inspire me to read the next book. I'll give it a go though.

My brother has recommended this series to me many times and I can see why. Bujold's writing is excellent and her characters are unique, well drawn, and easy to get emotionally invested in. It's very military-ish and there are some really unpleasant parts that sometimes feel like they are taken too lightly, but I think that when you look at the whole book you see that it's just the characters plowing through the horrors of war moreso than the author taking the subject material lightly. That seems to be confirmed by the epilogue. Between picking this up and now, I've kind of shifted moods and so will hold off continuing with the series, but I suspect that it's the kind of series where you can pick up a book every now and then when you feel like it without losing much.

This initial entry into the iconic Vorkosigan Saga is an odd thing, its plot much more simple character focused than an epic space opera might imply, but that plot being spread very thin over what seems like 2, 2.5 short stories threaded together. Cordelia and Aral's cross-battle lines love affair would a compelling and delightful thing.... if it made much sense in the first place. They fall for each other far too simply and the problems stem from there. Once the plot gets broader, more political, its twists and turns are excellently balanced, and the thing really works, but since the whole thing is centered on that tenuous connection it's merely a fine start. I hope the saga ramps up pretty hard.
