The women affected by the Trojan war span so many ages, classes, statuses, and Haynes did an incredible job of including as many as possible. It was so refreshing to hear the classic story from a forgotten point of view, and made choosing allegiance to one or the other side a much more difficult task than it had ever seemed before. 

Some pieces of Haynes’ writing seemed juvenile, disappointing when considering her long career. This was only a slight hinderance, and most of the book was compelling.

While I wanted to give it a 4.75, I realized I only didn't want to give it 5 because I couldn't place blame. Unlike in Stone Blind, where I could blame Athene or Perseus, I could blame no one in A Thousand Ships. And even then the book tried to place the blame, on Helen, on Paris, Aphrodite, Eris, Thetis, Zeus. But no one can take sole blame. And this books makes you face the sorrow of the women. Without a clear cut villian. It filled it's purpose beautifully and forced the reader to stare at the victims of war, with no one at fault.

I found it incredibly realistic that the women in this novel didn't necessarily realize that some of their thoughts and belief patterns about themselves and about other women were because of the patriarchy they are under.

Reading through the experiences of so many women and goddesses attached to the Trojan War was a fascinating journey. I learned a lot about the details of the battles and the characters. 

Reminiscent of Madeline Miller, but a different emotional tenor because Miller's stories hone in more on specific characters, in my experience. The many voices on both sides lend this book a sense of telling the unbiased, unvarnished truth of the war. A heavy topic, and dark themes reign, but most things of a graphic nature are only mentioned, rarely laid out in great detail.

Calliope felt like a strange inclusion since she wasn't directly affected by or involved in the war like everyone else in the book. Penelope's letters were distracting in my opinion, as often they took a meandering approach more like a train of thought than a letter.

I still enjoyed reading very much!

I struggled with this book in the beginning and ended up putting it down for a while. However, once I actually got into it, I ended up really enjoying it. Certain parts were tough to get through due to the content, but that’s par for the course when discussing women being enslaved as spoils of war.
