Not only does Greg Egan create a believable universe with physics much different than our own, he also manages to address social norms, gender issues, sexuality, and philosophy of science. Definitely a worthwhile read, and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Hard SF is not usually my favorite subgenre, and the reason is frankly that I don't like to wallow in the science. Don't get me wrong, I like the science to be plausible, but if it has too much boring explication of higher math and physics, I think the narrative suffers. I abandoned this one because not only was there a fair amount of physics, it was MADE UP PHYSICS. Interesting? Maybe to those interested in how physics really works, but I just could get into the story OR the science.

Super technical, lots of explanations about other worldly physicals and not quite enough interpersonal connections throughout. Very dry reading, difficult for me to fully grasp and understand the logic, mostly because I have no real desire to.

The world was interesting and the species and how they reproduce was interesting but not fully explained. If there had been more of that, I would have kept reading.

When people say science fiction is a literature of ideas, it is the SF of Greg Egan that they are talking about. It is not for everyone, but if you're one of the people it's for, then it is such a treat.

Awesome. Especially if you like relativity and or feminist alien scifi laced with physics diagrams.
