Initially I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy the book because I didn't like the main character A.J. Fikry. He is the proprietor of a bookstore on an island off the coast from New York.  He has specific ideas about what books deserve to be read and what books don't deserve to be read. He mostly only stocks the books he thinks deserve to be read. He is kind of insufferable and a book snob. His store isn't doing all that well. He did lose his wife a few years back. Early in the book something happens that causes A.K. Fikry to change some. The change is believable. It wasn't a wholesale change. From that point on, I enjoyed reading about him. I liked most of the supporting characters. The book covers a number of years in A.K. Fikry's life. I'm glad I read the book.

This book definitely kept me engaged - I finished it in three days! A light/medium read, though it includes serious subject matter (see StoryGraph content warnings). Fun for book lovers, as many books and short stories are referenced. My only "complaint" (if  one could even call it that) is that a few times the narrative skips ahead many years in a way that felt a little jolting.

A fast read that I’m glad to have read. It’s a very very good book…just not quite MY book, you know. It’s sparse in a way that mostly left me wanting more of most of it. But I’m sure for others, that could be exactly what makes it shine.

"speaks to the necessity of encountering stories at precisely the right time in our lives"

After reading the first page of this book I was gifted I realized I'd read it before (with the other cover, which is cutely depicted on the cover of this new edition). Apparently I thought it deserved 3 stars the first time (to review written), but I'm not sure if I was stingier with stars or didn't like it as well.

This time around I enjoyed the writing, sense of humor, and cozy, fast pace. I also probably took more issue with the adoption plotline, which was handled too casually for me in this reading with my current understanding of the process/trauma. It does fit with the vibe of the book but that makes it feel kind of like a device instead of an exploration of how it would impact the people involved. I expect some readers will love it for that, but it rubbed me the wrong way here (probably the same way some reviewers have left negative comments about the medical content/errors, which wasn't as problematic for me right now).

Always, quick read, lots of jabs at emotional content, pretty surface level and cozy though if that's what you're up for!

A cozy, warm blanket of a book. I absolutely loved all the different perspectives and getting to know everyone in the tiny town of Alice.
