“A witch and a witch hunter bound in holy matrimony. There was only one way such a story could end – a stake and a match.”

Lou is a witch on the run, but when she let’s her paranoia get the better of her, she finds herself in a precarious situation with a witch hunter. Forced into marriage, Lou must navigate her new life, hiding her true self from her husband as well as the witch out to sacrifice her.

I absolutely adored this book. Lou is insufferable, but in the best kind of way and her chemistry with Reid, her husband and witch hunter, is spot on. Other than the delightful tension and yearning between the two, I enjoyed Lou’s strength as an individual, as well as sidekick Coco.

Good magic systems, in my opinion anyway, relies on an equal measure of give and take, and Serpent & Dove nails that balance really well, and in a way that, I thought, felt original.

This was a real page turner for me and although I don’t really like anything that relies to heavily on religious themes, I think this struck a balance and the commentary on the hypocrisy of the church was really interesting. The character growth was another strength of this book and I also though plot, pace, and prose were all enjoyable. A couple of twists later, I’m really excited to see where book 2 takes us.

I LOVED this book! I was super happy to find that this was definitely leaning more towards New Adult than Young Adult.

The conflict between the witches and the humans in this world was rife with real issues. Neither side was completely good or completely bad, both sides were suffering. I’m really intrigued to see how this is all resolved because it just honestly feels like it can’t be because of deep and well constructed the conflict is between these two groups. Hopefully, in the next book we meet some more people who are middle grounded and less polarized in their views. These ideas are sexist, racist, and bigoted, towards the witches. But the witches are also sexist towards men and hateful towards non-magic people, although more justified they still cause many innocent people to suffer.

Lou was such a strong heroin. She witty, sarcastic, a good fighter, and forgiving. I would love to see more magic from her in the next few books as we are constantly told she’s weak in this book since she hasn’t used magic in two years.

Reid was awesome. I mean yes he definitely had some troublesome ideas about witches. But I think his character development was great and it’s only going to get better. Especially now that we know what we know about him! Ahhhh!!

Cosette was an amazing character. Also badass and sexy and strong! I can’t wait to see more of her world with the blood witches. Her love and friendship with Lou was so genuine and realistic. They fight, they make up, they disagree, but their love is still there.

Ansel. Okay, my little baby Ansel is the CUTEST. Honest to go the only man I want in my life and this book. He saw Lou for who she truly was even when Reid couldn’t. He was the first to swing to your the good side.

Now, I do wish we had more coming from the idea that the priests and “healers” we experimenting on their poor patients. I wanted that more “exposed.”

Anyway, we’ll see where the next two books take us!

On to Blood & Honey!!

Things I liked:
• The mechanics behind the white witches. I LOVE how their magic has limits and how the magic is presented. I also liked how the magic has a scent in this universe.
• Relationship between Reid and Lou was fast but surprisingly believable.
• I wasn’t expecting the final “twist” i guess you could say. A cruel twist of fate and i’m excited to see where it will lead in the next book.

Things I didn’t liked:
• I don’t think many of the side characters aside from the main few were developed.
• Some parts are cringey and predictable but overall not too much.
