pre-read:
i don't know what this is about, but i took one look at the cover and was positively rolling on the floor with laughter. you may not understand at this point. that's because.. you need to see. you just do. and i really REALLY hope that whoever designed this cover was shot. i mean fired.

mid-read:
i am out. got to the part where some guy is jacking off on an altar and ... im out.

I read a lot of Laurenston's other work first and I'm glad this held up to the rest. Disappointed she has no plans to continue the series (as of now), even though some fans think of Call to Crows as the next chapter in journey. While this story is a good setup for reading the Call to Crows series, the characters/setting are different and I want to hear about Arri and Janelle more!

I bloody love this author. Their characterization is amazing, they're irreverent in just the right places and... damn if I didn't have to eject half way through this book. This is your friendly contract/consent ethicist saying, "If it's not an enthusiastic yes, for the love of hell, NO."

And let's be clear: This is well done here. The nice guy is portrayed as nice, has *seriously* nice characteristics, and he's in beautiful genre form. And the line crossed isn't no-and-then-sex. It's control.

Which, well, there's a tradition of ravishment in romance novels which I'd rather like taken out behind the paint shed and executed. (and yes, it's totally valid to like that in a book, even if I can't) But. This isn't that. It's just control. As though somehow, "Just control," OK. And... for a lot - a LOT - of readers? It's just fine.

I'm not one of 'em.

Keep in mind that I got through Susan R. Matthew's An Exchange of Hostages and the initial Black Jewels trilogy just fine. The key is that those scenarios, while appalling and awful, are not presented as normalized. And this... as with a lot of other romance, is. And it's done better than most, which frankly is what had me running for the hills.

Yeah, five stars: It was amazing before I had to eject, and the reason I had to eject all of a sudden, full visceral NOPE, is that it was so damn well done.

Hunting Season is about Denise"Neecy" Lawrence, a history professor with PhD by day and a fearless Crow second in command by night. She feel annoyed since Willhelm Yager, The Raven's leader seems interested to her and always follow her like a dog with bone, or a bird with worm. Whatever. Yager want Neecy for forever even Neecy think she's not worthy for him. She was drug dealer before she gunned down by her boyfriend, almost dead and become Crow. Neecy thing Yager is a nice guy. What she doesn't know is, Yager is a nice HOT guy. They have sex for 24 hours, just to scratch the itch, but of course its not enough for Yager.

There's a threat from Hunters and Hunting Season is begin. Neecy must train her new member Arri Chang with the help of her fellow comrade Janelle, Katie and her leader, Didi. While she also resist her feeling to Yager. Now, this Viking must play dirty to win the heart of the most stubborn Crow member.

I have been read a lot of Shelly Laurenston books lately and I think she will become the "Author of the Year". At last for me. Her books is full of humor and crazy people. Snark fly everywhere. Add it with strong heroine that you want to shake your head when reading their bitchines and snark comment but you can help to adore them because of their strength. And Laurenston write a resilient, strong, annoying-but-cute, alpha-beta hero. Oh, and don't forget she write the steamiest story ever. What I can ask more?

She do it again with Hunting Season, even the craziness not as much as Pride series or her other series Dragon Kin. Love the way she take a new direction of Norse legend with creating The Ravens, Odin's warrior and The Crow. Imagine The Crow as Amazon women just from the Norse. The Crow is made by Skuld, one of the Norse Fate. Skuld also love to read Penthouse magazines and The Crow kinda remind me of Valkyrie from Immortal After Dark by Kresley Cole. Nosy, bitchy, snarky but full of fun. Funny thing is, the Valkyrie in this book are Crow's "enemy". Not enemy after all, just they like to pissed The Crow off. Valkyries is full of bimbo that Odin created and meaningless creature. But some Old School Valkyries, the true Valkyries is a healer to the Ravens and don't give Odin a shit.

I feel sometimes Neecy is too stubborn and I got impatient with her try to resist her feeling toward Yager. As for Yager, I love his Alpha-Beta character. He's a geek but also 6 ft 7 inch Viking that make him ....hunk. He does care for Neecy, and wait patiently for her. He also tend her when she got wounded by the Hunters. The other characters are crazy like always. I see the possibilities of the sequel, since there's a chance some characters will get their own story. Such as Tye, Yager second in command, with Janelle. And Mike who is like typical dumb hero Laurenston created with the meek Arri Chang. Shelly Laurenston implied at her site that she doesn't know when she will write the sequel. But I really hope some times in the future, she will write it.

This book was so hotttt. I have read the Pack Challenge Series and they too are so very yummy. The characters are so much like normal people until they are pushed to limits while protecting their own.

This was kind of like her Pride series. Not as funny but still fun. Fun characters, a good plot and a cute romance with lots of sex.

I started this unsure. I love Shelly Laurenston's Magnus Pack and Pride series but I'm not all that big on her "Dragon Kin" series - I'm not sure what it is about that series, but I haven't been able to read very many of them - not that I haven't really enjoyed them, just that I haven't felt that obsessive pull to find out what happens in that world the way I have for her modern world with a twist. Given my lack of tenacity for the "Dragon Kin" series, I didn't know if I'd dig a story about warriors with sworn allegiances to Nordic gods/goddesses who happened to have retractable wings.

It only took a chapter or two for me to realize that I was going to be obsessed with these characters too which is frustrating since there aren't any other books currently out about this world and I haven't seen any mention of anything coming and OMG there had better be a follow up about about Tye and Janelle right effing quick because I neeeeeed that in my life stat - seriously.

It was fun to see that shifters exist in the same world as these Crows and Ravens - I'm hoping for some fun crossover stuff.
